John and Chie's trip to Eigg 2002

Index

13:06:01 Having had a string of hectic days and early starts, neither myself nor Chie were particularly keen to get up very early when we finally had the chance for a lie in on Tuesday morning. So, here's lunch, which was probably more like breakfast for us.

13:06:07 Today's theme was Cornwall. I'm not sure if this greatly impacted lunch, but I have a fairly strong feeling Yarg may have been involved.

13:06:24 Chie and I, both looking bizarrely like we just got out of bed.

14:06:36 I really liked this picture - it conjures images of frontier living in the wild west or something. Anyway, after lunch we'd decided to go and find the Laig Gorge, something I'd wanted to do last year, but hadn't got round to.

14:12:15 I'm never really sure why I feel the need to take pictures of so much livestock.

14:45:54 Off the beaten track now, and heading towards the tricky parts you need to go through to get to the gorge. I didn't seem to get much in the way of pictures of dense undergrowth and so on, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

14:57:01 An exceedingly rickety bridge emmerging from the undergrowth to go over a rather sudden and unexpected ravine.

15:09:17 The rather nice waterfall that marks the start of the gorge. I took a video of this.

15:10:29 Chie and Dad 'neath the waterfall.

15:10:46 The same again, the other way round.

15:22:28 A little further down the gorge.

15:22:42 It's difficult to get an impression of the landscape here from still photos alone. The Laig gorge is really quite a wonderful place - every few meters it changes it presents you with something new and interesting.

15:27:21 Chie eventually gave up clambering along the rocks, and walked through the stream.

15:27:27 Those are very wet feet there.

15:29:24 A view out to the end of the gorge, down across the meadows, towards Laig farm, and eventually (although maybe you can't quite see it here) the sea.

15:29:37 The same thing again more or less.

15:31:57 Chie and lots of rocks and water.

15:35:28 Hmmm... this was a lot trickier to walk along than it looks! Some of the pools were probably two or more metres deep.

15:35:36 Chie is probably thinking about shoe shopping right now.

15:48:08 I think this may be at the bottom of a particularly difficult bit.

15:48:38 Chie having successfully, errr, conquered, the gorge.

15:49:10 Me and Dad trying to look as intrepid as possible.

15:53:03 Towards the end, the gorge becomes a lot more gentle.

15:53:12 In fact the sun even came out. Nice rock formations up there.

15:53:41 Still a bit more clambering to do it seems.

15:54:25 A kind of sedimentary rock made amost entirely from shell.

15:56:16 A good look at that rock formation again.

16:16:34 Dad wandered back to the house after the end of the gorge, to dutifully prepare dinner. Myself and Chie thought we'd wander down to the beach.

16:17:00 Hmmm, although there is some blue sky up there somewhere, the sea still doesn't look particularly inviting.

16:18:24 Chie, feet already soaked, saw no real benefit in steering clear of the sea.

16:18:32 Chie looking pensively toward Rum.

16:18:47 She is actually happy there isn't she?

16:47:14 On the walk back to the house, we passed a couple of white horses.

16:47:18 I was really quite pleased with this shot. If it just didn't have the barbed wire, this would be really quite splendid I reckon.

16:47:30 The majestic horse's slightly more down to earth friend.

17:48:51 Cows again. This is by the gate to the Glebe, where they'd decided to lay seige. The leftmost, backmost is the bull, to make matters a little more worrying. However, he seemed remarkably good-tempered. Whether having this many girlfriends around him supported or contradicted this theory, I'm not sure. I got a rather unfortunate video of our bovine friends here.

20:04:07 After dinner (some very nice Cornish pasties), Luke here and the rest of us relax around the table with a few drinks.

20:04:19 Alex looking more relaxed than most.

20:04:33 Janie, Moira and John seemingly very interested in what whoever was sitting the other side of the table is saying.

20:05:02 Ah, it appears Martin is doing the talking.

22:36:16 Later on, the real hard nuts within the group gathered together for a high stakes game of poker.

23:03:58 Chie, a victim of capitalist greed.

23:04:19 The other side of the poker table.

23:06:15 Me holding aloft my winnings. It had been a good night for me.

23:49:06 The group had been wittled down by this point it seems. I think we still carried on for almost an hour after this though...
