John and Chie's trip to Eigg 2002

Index

11:34:33 Our last full day, and we were determined to make it seem dynamic and exciting. I think thats the reason for the strange pose Chie has adopted here.

12:00:48 We'd decided to go for a walk over to Laig bay (again). On the way over a small boy was playing on the boat beside the old post office, although he's actually very difficult to spot in this picture (maybe because I was still insistent on messing about with the colour adjustment feature).

12:02:59 Nought but but a wee shed, o'er the hillside. This was an experiment to see if black and white really did make things more interesting. The jury is still out.

12:17:45 The windy (either pronunciation works) road down to Cleadale, again in black and white.

13:01:38 Yes, I really did go for a swim in the sea. Head under the water and everything. I was determined to at some point, and this was the only real "warm" day we had. The water was, of course, still bloody freezing.

13:03:26 Chie also waded in up to her waist (ish). Considering just over a week prior to that, she'd left Tokyo in temperatures of 35 degrees, I guess that was actually pretty brave.

13:04:40 On looking at this picture I find words like "exhilarating" and "invigorating" replaced with words more along the lines of "mindless" and "idiot".

13:22:41 After hurriedly drying ourselves off, and putting on coats and jumpers, I couldn't resist but take a few pictures of Rum.

13:24:21 I clearly wanted to get a lot of sky in here. (had I turned a little to the right, I might have also got some Skye in as well).

13:43:01 Chie, not looking a lot like someone who was in the sea forty minutes ago.

13:46:02 Yet another picture of Rum, this time taken from ground level. I wanted to get the footprints in too, for some reason.

14:29:12 After leaving the beach, Chie decided (slightly to my surprise) that she wanted to go to the top of the ridge above Cleadale. I'm really rather pleased with this picture.

14:30:43 Another picture of Rum. Interesting to think though, that three quarters of an hour and two pictures ago I was taking them at sea level and now, errr, this, um, is oh I don't know, but a lot higher up.

14:43:07 From the bottom, the ridge looks rocky and inhospitable, however, beyond the rocks there was this little valley which was surprising lush and secret garden like.

15:08:24 Chie, and, look, the Sgurr managed to creep in yet again.

15:08:41 The weather could almost be described as nice - well at least not wet and not particularly windy.

15:15:42 I like this a lot. I never cease to be impressed by how patient Chie is of me endleslly taking pictures of her.

15:16:27 Probably one of my favourite pictures of me from Eigg this year.

15:16:32 Hmmm not sure why Chie wanted to take this again to the right slightly... Oh well!

15:18:58 There's Rum again. Anyone who has been around this bit of Eigg with a camera will know how difficult these sorts of pictures are to resist.

15:21:13 Taken with the self-timer. Critics might complain there's too much rock in the foreground, but I really like that - it makes us both look tiny.

15:22:41 Oddly I really like this picture too, which Chie may have taken completely by accident. Whilst still on the top here I also got a video showing the view in 360 degrees.

15:57:53 Gradually, Chie's idle curiosity to see the top of the ridge turned into quite a long and ardurous walk - there were no paths at all, and it was quite difficult terrain.

16:16:54 Short of a few thistles, a Whisky distillery and a bagpipe player, this sort of picture looks quintessentially Scottish to me.

16:45:22 On the way down the hill here, I discovered a couple of hidden waterfalls, which I liked a lot.

16:50:57 If there isn't an old island myth attached to the reddish waters coming from beneath this waterfall, I'd be very surprised.

16:59:00 Chie wanted to take a picture of some bracken it seems.

16:59:04 Me and one of the waterfalls. It was probably shortly after this whilst trying to find our way through the bracken I got bitten by a tick, for which I'm now taking antibiotics. Ho, hum.

21:18:36 We had dinner that evening late, and to end poignantly, tonight was Scotland. So, unsurprisingly, it was haggis neeps and tatties all round (with vegetarian haggis, which is actually very nice, for the herbivores among us).

21:18:46 Oddly a bit over exposed here. We'd had atsukan (hot sake) with the meal, along with the standard mix of beer, wine and whisky, so I have a strong suspicion several among us were somewhat less than sober by this point...

21:23:22 Not sure why Lucy is being subjected to this video interrogation here.

21:42:17 John and others, amidst the bizarre "Umbrdee-a-di-do" song, including actions. I took a video of this, but it's unlikely it'll look anything but rediculous if you don't know the people involved! (Come to think of it, it looks fairly rediculous no matter what).

21:49:50 Towards the end of the song. Moira is cowering in shame just out of shot here.
