Birds
The island is a stopping off point for many interesting seabirds.
One particular is the Manx Shearwater, pictured below. It has a
distinctive call, which can be heard here.
Shearwaters only make this call at night, when they come back to
feed their young in the burrows after a few days fishing out at sea.
For those prepared to stay
up, a night out with the Shearwaters is one of the unique experiences
of life on Bardsey. When they arrive on the island close to their
burrows they're often exhausted... On one notable "shearwater night"
one of the authors of this website, spending a night on the mountain
top, awoke to discover a startled shearwater had made an emergency
landing on a local geographical feature known as his stomach...
Getting close to nature?
One particularly good place to find them
is Bae'r Nant.
A number of other seabirds can be seen here taking a rest on
Maen Bugail.
